McDaniel 76, York (Pa.) 63

YORK, Pa. — The York College women’s basketball team saw their home woes continue as they fell to McDaniel College, 76-63, on Monday night in a non-conference contest at Wolf Gym. The Spartans are now 0-5 at home as they fall to 6-6 overall. McDaniel, winners of six straight, improve to 10-2 overall with the victory.
The first half was a nip-and-tuck affair as neither team led by more than six points. That six point edge was York’s as the Spartans held at 25-19 with 3:09 left in the half. The Green Terror trimmed the Spartan lead to two at the intermission, 30-28. The first half was rough and tumble as the two teams combined for 22 turnovers, 15 fouls, and a shooting percentage of 35% (22-63). Spartan freshman Kristen Daly was the lone bright spot for YCP as she tallied 16 of the Spartans’ 30 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. Daly was limited to 10 minutes in the half due to quick foul trouble.
The second half saw the visitors score five of the first seven points of the stanza to take a 33-32 lead. That would be a lead that the Green Terror would not relinquish. The Spartans cut the McDaniel lead to two at 37-35 with 16:16 but that was the beginning of the end as Kelly Cramp drained a three pointer to kick start a 24-7 run that pushed the McDaniel lead to 19 at 61-42 with 9:08 left in the game. Daly scored seven points on a 9-0 Spartan run that trimmed the lead to 10 with 3:54 left but it would not be enough to keep the Spartans from remaining winless at home.
Kristy Costa led the Green Terror with 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Costa was 6-for-9 from the floor and 6-for-9 from the free throw line. Cramp added 15 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Cramp was 6-for-6 from the free throw line as the Green Terror ended the game 27-of-38 from the charity stripe. Katy Powell was the third McDaniel player in double figures as she tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Daly celebrated her 19th birthday in style as the freshman poured in a career-high 25 points while she also had seven rebounds and one blocked shot in just 23 minutes of action. Daly was 12-for-14 from the floor including 1-for-1 from beyond the arc. Senior Heather Kessler was the only other Spartan in double figures with 11 points while she also had five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Daly and Kessler combined for 57% of the Spartans points and 60% of their field goals as the Spartans continue to struggle when wearing the home whites. Sarah Lyttle pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while she also had four points in a career-high 31 minutes of play.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 40.3% from the floor. The green and white actually harassed McDaniel into 35.8% shooting from the floor but the Green Terror held a significant 52-37 edge in rebounds. McDaniel pulled down 22 offensive rebounds and got 16 second-chance points in the game. The visitors also attempted 24 more free throws than the Spartans and made 19 more free throws than York.
The Spartans finished the contest with 25 miscues while McDaniel had 22 turnovers. York is averaging 22 turnovers per game at home while they are making four less mistakes per game on the road.
York returns to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Marymount University for a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time in Arlington is set for 6:00 pm. The Spartans are currently 6-1 away from home in 2004-05.
