Christopher Newport 66, Salisbury 50

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — In one of the final tune-ups before conference play begins, the Captains defeated Salisbury, 66-50, Sunday evening to improve to 8-0 in the Freeman Center in 2004-2005.

CNU led by 11 at the break, 35-24, on 15-of-33 (46%) shooting from the field and 4-of-13 (31%) on three's. The Sea Gulls finished the first half 10-of-25 (40%) from the floor and 2-of-8 on three's.

The Captains shooting percentage went down in the second half to 36% (11-of-31) shooting and 5-of-14 (36%) on three's. Salisbury shot 12-of-24 (50%) from the floor and 2-of-7 (29%) on three's, but CNU still out scored the Sea Gulls 31-26.

For the game, Salisbury finished 22-of-49 (45%) from the floor, 4-of-15 (27%) on three's and just 2-of-4 from the free throw line. The Captains finished 26-of-64 (41%) from the field, 9-of-27 (33%) on three's and just 5-of-11 (46%) from the charity stripe.

The Captains scored 13 turnovers off 17 Salisbury turnovers and added 24 points in the paint compared to SU's 14.

Segun Odumeru led all scorers with 27 points and he also finished with nine rebounds. Justin Rice added 15 points off the bench.

Jeremy Romeo led the Captains with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting including 4-of-7 on three's. Korey Lewis contributed 12 points, Blake Brookman finished with nine points and Roderic Carey had six points and 12 rebounds.

Salisbury falls to 6-7 while CNU is now 9-2. The Captains return to action Wednesday as they travel to Shenandoah for the first USA South game of the year. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
