Widener 78, Wilmington (Del.) 75

CHESTER, Pa. — Junior center Kris Clarkson slam
dunk off a miss from sophomore guard Essien Ford with just eight seconds left helped Widener (7-5) improve to 5-0 at home with a 78-75 win over Division II opponent Wilmington (1-9) Saturday
afternoon.

The Pioneers got a game-high 25 points from senior forward Matt Sheaffer
and 20 points from Ford on the afternoon.
The game featured 12 lead changes and 16 ties, with the last tie coming with 2:15 left as Ford hit two foul shots to tie the game at 72. Widener took the lead for good with 1:41 left as Sheaffer connected on a jumper to give Widener
a 74-72 lead. Ford’s jumper with just 58 seconds left put the Pioneers up by four, but Wilmington cut the Widener lead to one at 76-75 with 41 seconds left as junior guard Gary Williams hit his lone three pointer of the game.

Sophomore guard Jasen Maciey attempted a three-pointer with just two seconds left, but Clarkson blocked the shot ending the threat.

Widener did start off on a 8-0 run, before Wilmington took its first lead of
the ball game at 10-9 with 14:41 left in the opening half. Both teams traded
the lead six times, before Wilmington held a slim one point lead at the half,
41-40.

Wilmington was led by senior forward Greg Brown who had 24 points, while
junior guard Steve Christensen had 15 points.

Sheaffer also had a team-high nine rebounds for Widener, who were out-rebounded 35-33.

Widener enters Commonwealth Conference play for the first time in 2005 on
Tuesday, as the Pioneers travel to Reading to face Albright.
