Whitworth 60, George Fox 53

SPOKANE, Wash. — Visiting George Fox University fought hard to overcome a double digit deficit and take a lead midway through the second half, but the visiting Bruins could not hold off 14th-ranked Whitworth College as the Pirates pulled out a 60-53 Northwest Conference victory on Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

A five minute scoreless drought spelled doom for George Fox (7-4 overall, 1-1 NWC). The Bruins took a 47-43 lead on a three point shot by Katy Campbell with 10:13 to play. But George Fox would not score again until Robin Taylor's basket with 5:38 to go, and by the Pirates had retaken the lead.

Whitworth scored on three of its next four possessions, including a three pointer from freshman Holly Ridings, to take a 58-51 lead with 1:11 to play. After a lay-in by Kim Leith and two missed free throws by Whitworth, the Bruins had two chances to pull closer but both three-point attempts by Leith were off of the mark.

Sarah Shogren led Whitworth with 17 points and 13 rebounds, her seventh double double of the season. Tiffany Speer added 15 points, but struggled by shooting three of nine from the field. Ridings finished with 10 points, including three three pointers.

Kellie Thomas scored 16 points for the Bruins. Leith finished with 10 points despite foul trouble that limited her minutes. Liz Clark led George Fox with 11 rebounds.

George Fox made only one of 16 three pointers in the first half, then made four of their first five in the second half to overcome a 33-21 deficit. A basket by Erin Powers gave the Bruins a 34-33 lead just under five minutes into the second half.

Whitworth returns to action next Friday when the Pirates play at 6th-ranked Puget Sound. George Fox does not return to action until next Saturday when the Bruins host Linfield College.
