Waynesburg 78, Penn State-New Kensington 71

WAYNESBURG, Pa. — After trailing 16 points at halftime, the Waynesburg College men's basketball team erased the lead and took Saturday's contest against Penn State-New Kensington into overtime. In the extra frame, the Yellow Jackets continued their momentum and posted a 78-71 win in game two of a season-long three-game home stand.

Waynesburg (6-6) outscored PSU-New Kensington 32-16 in the second half to force the game into overtime tied at 66-66. The Jackets hit all six of their free throws in the extra frame en route to 12 points, countered with 5 by the Lions.

Sophomore point guard Beau Wilson led the Jackets with 21 points on 6 of 10 shooting, including 3 of 5 from three-point territory. He also hit all six of his free throws, all in overtime.

Reserve Ryan Bujnowski scored a career-high 18 points in the win in a career-high 32 minutes of play. He made 8-of-13 attempts from the field and grabbed seven rebounds, four offensive. Bujnowski has scored in double figures four times this season, including in three of the last four games.

With eight minutes left in the second half, the Lions comfortably led 60-49. The Jackets mounted a 15-3 run to take a 64-63 lead with 1:42 on a lay up from Shawn Coleman, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

After a Jacket turnover, Aaron Knight hit a three-pointer to give the Lions a 66-64 lead with 45 seconds left in the second half. After a miss from three-point territory, Bujnowski forced a Lion turnover with 26 second remaining giving the Jackets one last chance.

Following a timeout, senior captain Ray Gillespie found Coleman underneath for a lay up to force the game into overtime.

In overtime, Coleman and Wilson combined to score all 12 of the Jacket points.

Freshman Josh Parisi grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, including a season team-high seven offensive, and added five points.

Brian Nichols scored a game-high 23 points for the Lions, while Jamil Nelson led all players with 13 rebounds. The Lions committed 27 turnovers in the game and shot a combined 8 of 30 (26.7 percent) from the field in the second half and overtime.

The overtime game was just the Yellow Jackets third in the last three seasons with their last overtime win in Jan. 2003.

Waynesburg returns to action on Monday when it hosts Hood College for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Yellow Jackets have won four of their last five games, three of which have been at home.
