Aurora 79, Rockford 71

ROCKFORD, Ill. — Aurora University freshman Larry Welton demonstrated why he is one of the premiere players in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference, as he poured in 26 points and hauled down 12 rebounds in his team's 79-71 wn at Rockford College. Welton hit 11-of-18 shots from the field for the Spartans (11-3, 1-0) in the win over the Regents (7-4, 0-1).

Welton's teammate Courtney Carson chipped in 21 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and dished off 6 assists. Drew Gronau's 16 points (8 of which came via the free throw line) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers for Aurora.

AU out-rebounded Rockford by a 43 to 36 margin. The Spartans had 17 offensive boards.

The Regents had four players in double figures. Maurice Lewers had 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Maurice Smith and Joel Carter each tallied 15 points (Smith and Carter had 10 and 6 rebounds, respectively, as well).

Mike Jamerson rounded out the quartet with 12 points. Jamerson also gave off 4 assists.
