New York City Tech 86, CCNY 80

BROOKLYN — The New York City College of Technology men’s basketball team topped their CUNY Athletic Conference opponent from The City College of New York, 86-80 this afternoon at City Tech’s Klitgord Center. The team returns to the court on Wednesday, January 12 to face the College of Staten Island (7:00 pm) in a battle of CUNYAC South Division leaders. Both men’s teams are 4-0 in league play.

Despite a 24-point halftime deficit and a 27-point hole with 18:17 remaining in the game, the Yellow Jackets full-court press forced ten turnovers during a seven minute span to outscore CCNY 34-6 and grab the home team’s first lead of the contest 64-63. City Tech (7-4, 4-0 CUNY) followed a 52-28 first half with a 58-28 second half to keep CCNY (2-11, 0-4) winless in CUNYAC action.

During that 7:42 span, City Tech forced the Beavers into 10 turnovers, outrebounded their opponents 5-2 and shot 12-14 from the field, 5-5 from the line and nailed four three-pointers. Junior Clyde Forteau (St. Raymond’s/Bronx, NY), who had his best game of the season with 17 second–half points earlier in the week, continued his hot hand, nailing all four treys during the comeback. The rally actually extended to 39-6, before City Tech head coach Ray Amalbert subbed two of his starters out and called a timeout.

Senior center Shacun Malave (DeWitt Cinton/Bronx, NY), the schools all-time leader in points, rebounds and blocks had 21, 17 and four in those same categories on the day for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore forward Otis Saylee (Seward Park/New York, NY) scored 18 points, Forteau finished with 16, senior guard Nkosi Hamilton (August Martin/Queens,NY) scored 13 points and senior Jason Senior (Satellite Academy/Brooklyn, NY) added 13 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

CCNY was led by sophomore forward Robert Barker (LaSalle/Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore guard Andrew Mungin (Vanguard/Bronx, NY) with 15 points each. Barker also had eight rebounds and shot 6-7 from the field. Classmate James Boddie (Jane Addams/Bronx, NY) added 13 points despite being saddled with four fouls and seniors Avain Gourdine (Manhattan Center/Bronx, NY) and Darryl France (Martin Van Buren/South Ozone Park, NY) each scored 11.
