The Mules (6-5, 3-1) cut a lead that had been as much as 11 points in the first half to one when sophomore Jeff Stewart hit a three-pointer to make the score 45-44 with 12:37 left in the game.
Muhlenberg twice had the ball with a chance to take the lead, but turned it over both times. The Mules still trailed by only three points, 52-49, when Stewart converted a layup at the 10-minute mark, but they would not make another shot for another six minutes. The Bullets (5-6, 2-2) went on their 17-3 run during that span to open up a commanding 17-point lead.
Gettysburg, which eventually extended its lead to 20, shot 57.7 percent – 68.4 percent on two-pointers – against a Muhlenberg defense that held its previous three opponents under 40 percent.
Senior David Glaser came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points. He also had five assists and four rebounds. Sophomore Mike Spadafora added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while junior Matt Whelan scored a season-high 15 points.
Stewart had a huge game, scoring 24 points and hitting all three of his three-point attempts. He scored 16 of the Mules’ 36 second-half points and also blocked three shots. Junior Jimmy O’Brien (13 points) and sophomore Tom Scott (11) also scored in double figures for Muhlenberg.
