MSOE, RENSSELAER ADVANCE TO ENGINEERS CLASSIC FINALS
Milwaukee – In the inaugural Raider Engineers Classic, host MSOE and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) advanced to Sunday’s championship after posting victories on Saturday at the MSOE Kern Center Arena.
MSOE topped California Institute of Technology (Caltech), 52-38, in Saturday’s nightcap while RPI defeated Polytechnic University, 75-54, in the opener.
The two teams will square off for the Engineers Classic title game at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Kern Center Arena. Caltech and Polytechnic play each other for the consolation championship at 1 p.m.
In a slow first half, Caltech had the early advantage with a 16-15 lead at the break. But the Raiders’ offense got going in the second.
MSOE senior Jorone Taylor-Lewis scored 15 points, including 2-of-3 shooting from three-point range. Freshman Robert Verdun and junior Jeff Mikos and nine and eight points, respectively, for the Raiders.
Caltech’s high man was Jordan Carlson, who scored a game-high 18 points. Caltech dropped to 1-8 while MSOE improved its record to 5-7.
In the opener of the Engineers Classic, RPI’s John Van Schaick scored a game-high 21 points in just 20 minutes of action. Polytechnic’s Aboubakar Bamba scored 17 in a losing effort. RPI improved to 4-4 on the season while Polytechnic dropped to 1-8.
