Pacific Lutheran 68, Lewis and Clark 59

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran men's basketball team held Lewis & Clark to 32.8 percent from the field -- the worst shooting night for a Lute opponent this season -- and parlayed a good night on the offensive end of the floor into a 68-59 victory over the Pioneers in a Northwest Conference game tonight.

The Lutes evened their conference record at 1-1 and improved to 3-8 overall. Lewis & Clark is now 4-5 overall, 0-1 in the conference.

Landon Heidenreich and Drew Cardwell both connected from three-point range and Sudon DeSuze made a lay-up as the Lutes took an 8-0 lead with 14:49 left in the first half. The Lutes maintained the lead the rest of the game, turning back several Pioneer rallies. Lewis & Clark got to within three points on four occasions in the second half but the Lutes answered the challenge each time.

Kurt Oliver's jumper with 3:39 left gave the Lutes their biggest lead of the first half at 32-19. Lewis & Clark scored the final seven points of the half to close the margin to 32-26.

The Pioneers whittled the difference to three points, 35-32, with 16:23 left in the game. The Lutes answered with a 12-0 run to go in front 47-32 with 13:09 remaining.

Lewis & Clark battled back and again had the margin down to three, 47-44, with 6:41 to go. Drew Cardwell made two foul shots and DeSuze connected on one-of-two from the line to push the lead back to six. Mark Robinowitz hit a three-pointer to again pull the Pioneers to within three. Cardwell then made a jumper, but Travis Jones sank two free throws for the Pioneers.

Cardwell made a lay-up and Heidenreich hit two free throws to push the lead to seven points, 56-49 with 3:25 left. The Pioneers got the margin back to three, 58-55, on Robinowitz' three-pointer with 2:12 remaining. But Heidenreich and Oliver both scored four points and Cardwell two in a 76 second span to propel the Lutes to a 12 point margin. Robinowitz made a three-pointer with three seconds left for the final margin of victory.

Cardwell scored 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, Oliver had 12 points, DeSuze scored 12 points and pulled down 10 boards and Heidenreich finished with 9 points to lead the Lutes. PLU shot 47.1 percent from the field (24-51) including 8-16 from the three point line for the game.

Robinowitz finished with 20 points to pace Lewis & Clark.
