King's 81, Alvernia 69

January 8, 2005 —

KING'S MEN DOWN ALVERNIA BEHIND HORGAN'S 32

WILKES-BARRE -- Brian Horgan netted 32 points to power the King's men's basketball team to a 81-69 victory over Alvernia in the first round of the Wilkes-Barre Challenge Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 10-2 while Alvernia slipped to 6-4.

King's built a 45-29 halftime lead as Horgan netted 20 points. The Monarchs continued to control the action in the second half and built its biggest lead at 23 points when John Soboleski converted a three-point play with 9:26 left.

The Monarchs maintained a comfortable  78-62 lead with 2:30 remaining when Jamie Cousart sank three-of-four foul shots.  

Horgan was brilliant in making 13-of-15 shots from the field, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. The Monarch senior added 10 rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes of action.

Marty O'Hora had a solid game with 15 points while Soboleski added a career-high 11 points. Landon Gabriel had eight points and eight assists while Vince Scalzo netted seven points with five boards. Cousart chipped in with six points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Alvernia was led by Zach Straining with 17 points and six rebounds while Chris Talley also added 17 points.  Lamar Brickus netted 10 points while Garret Etzel added nine.  Ryan Finger chipped in with eight points and six boards for the Crusaders.

King's will face The Apprentice School Sunday at 3:00 p.m. while Alvernia meets Wilkes at 1:00 p.m.
