Elms College (6-4 overall, 2-2 NAC), which ranked 42nd nationally in Division III in scoring offense (81.1 ppg) entering this week, was limited to 30.9-percent shooting from the field while being held to its lowest point total of the season.
Saturday’s game featured a total of eight lead changes, including five in the final nine minutes.
With the game tied 46-46 and 5:56 remaining, Seyboth stole a pass, converted a layup and the ensuing free throw after being fouled on the play to give the Blazers a 49-46 lead.
From there, however, Deetjen took over as he nailed a pair of 3-pointers and a layup in 80 seconds to give the Beavers the lead for good at 54-49.
Junior guard Travis Magnusson (Thomaston, ME), junior guard Trafton Teague (Fairfield, ME) and Deetjen all finished with 13 points apiece to lead a balanced offensive attack for the Beavers, who have already played a highly competitive non-conference schedule that included losses at Division I opponents Davidson and UMaine-Orono earlier this season.
Elms College returns to NAC play on Sunday, January 9 when it hosts Thomas College. Game time is 3:00 p.m. at the Maguire Center.
