Madison, NJ — Drew broke a 69-69 tie by converting seven of nine free throw attempts over the final 1:03 of the second overtime and the Rangers went on to defeat Union, 78-72, in a non-league matchup. Melissa Marra’s jumper with 2:50 left in the second OT had given the Dutchwomen a 69-67 lead before Drew tied the game with 2:32 left. The Rangers then hit four of five shots from the charity stripe to go up by four, 73-69, before Marra hit a three-point field goal to pull the Dutchwomen to within one, 73-72, with 11 seconds left. Melissa Coover converted two free throws to give the hosts a 75-72 lead with 10 seconds left before Union turned the ball over. Melissa Kraft hit both of her charity shots with seven seconds to round out the final margin.
Trailing by three at the half, 29-26, the Dutchwomen found themselves down by 13, 50-37, with 11:43 left in regulation. Senior forward Katlyn Cunningham, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, caught fire as she scored 11 of the game’s next 13 points to pull the Dutchwomen back to within four, 52-48, with 7:14 on the clock.
A jumper by junior guard Erika Eisenhut cut Union’s deficit to three, 57-54, at 4:05 before Cunningham scored a layup with 2:07 left in regulation to bring Union to within one, 57-56, at 2:07. Sophomore forward Krystal Hammond gave Union a 59-57 advantage with a layup and follow-up free throw with 1:24 remaining. However, a layup by Jennifer Weldon tied the game with 1:05 left before two missed opportunities by the Dutchwomen sent the game into its first extra session.
Cunningham and Marra, who contributed a dozen points, both scored for the Dutchwomen before Eisenhut’s three point field goal with two seconds remaining tied the game at 66 and forced the second extra session. Eisenhut finished the game with 18 points, three assists and two steals in 38 minutes.
