Vassar 78, Delaware Valley 69

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — Vassar College used a 17-3 run in the second half to overcome a seven-point deficit and defeat host Delaware Valley College, 78-69, in a non-conference game.

The Brewers, who were playing their first game since December 5, improved to 5-3 on the season while the Aggies fell to 4-6.

Delaware Valley trailed 48-45 before going on a 10-0 spurt to take a 55-48 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the contest. Meril Branch sparked the run with five points while Mike Ezell added three.

However, the lead was short lived as Vassar scored 17 of the game’s next 20 points to take a 65-58 advantage with 6:25 to go. Seth Taft had five points while Lawrence Avitabile and Judson Winton added four apiece.

Two minutes later, Delaware Valley pulled to within five, 67-62, but the Brewers countered six straight to put the game away.

Vassar jumped out to a quick 12-3 advantage before Delaware Valley rallied to get back in the game. The Aggies took their first lead of the half on an Isaiah Pinckney layup with 23 seconds left, but Avitabile hit a basket with two seconds remaining to give the Brewers a 35-34 lead at the break.

Avitabile paced Vassar with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Taft finished with 15 points and six assists. Winton added 12 points while William Kieffer and Tyson Brazell reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Branch and Pinckney finished with game-highs of 22 points apiece for Delaware Valley. Branch came off the bench to hit eight of 13 shots from the field and also added five rebounds and four steals in 27 minutes of action.

Pinckney was 7-for-13 from the field to go along with three steals. Maurice Slaughter contributed 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
