Colby 65, Bates 59

WATERVILLE, Maine — Patrick McGowan (North Attleboro, Mass.) scored 13 points in the second half and went over 1,000 career points in leading the Colby College men's basketball team to a 65-59 victory over Bates College in non-conference play Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The conference game between Colby and the Bobcats will take place next Saturday at Bates at 3 p.m. The Mules improved to 9-2 on the season, while Bates fell to 9-3.

McGowan became the 31st player in Colby basketball history to reach 1,000 career points and now ranks 30th in all-time scoring for the Mules with 1,002 points. McGowan finished with 21 points.

After the teams battled to a 30-30 tie at halftime, Bates opened up a 48-40 lead with 11:23 left in the game. The Mules, though, went on a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 52-50 lead on a McGowan 3-point shot with 6:03 remaining.

Bates took its final lead of the game at 54-52 when Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine) hit a lay-up with 5:26 remaining. McGowan nailed another 3-pointer with 5:04 left that put the Mules up for good at 55-54. Colby scored the next seven points on lay-ups by McGowan and Drew Cohen (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and two free throws from Cohen for a 62-54 margin.

Andrew Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) had 14 points for Colby, while Cohen finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Michael Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) had nine points.

Ray paced Bates with 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Brian Gerrity (Augusta, Maine) had 12 points, while Elliot Linsley (Murrieta, Calif.) had seven points and seven rebounds.

Bates had a huge 46-28 advantage on the boards and pulled down 21 offensive rebounds to Colby's four. The Mules shot 48 percent from the field to the Bobcats' 36 percent.
