SUNY-Maritime 89, Centenary 78

Hackettstown, NJ — Junior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, AL/G. W. Carver) scored a career high 28 points as he led the Privateers to their first win of the season against the Cyclones of Centenary College in men’s basketball Skyline Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Maritime had four players scoring in double digits, junior guard Gerard Danzy (Monroeville, NY/Hillcrest) scored 18 points and finished with four rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Jonathan Holler (N. Tonawanda, NY/Cardinal O’Hara) broke over the 100 points mark on the year scoring 15 points and grabbed nine boards, he currently leads the team in rebounding. Junior forward Zishaan Raymond (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) had his best game of the year scoring ten points and added four rebounds and three steals.

This game marks the first win of head coach Tom Spina since returning to Maritime after serving as an assistant coach for the Army women’s basketball team last year. Spina had a brief stint as the head coach of the Privateers back in the 2000-01 season after serving as an assistant coach here for a couple of years. Coach Spina is a 1994 graduate of Maritime where he also played four years of varsity basketball.

Maritime now improves to 1-8 on the year and 1-2 in the Skyline moving them into a tie with Mount Saint Vincent for eighth place. Centenary drops to 0-11 on the year and are still tied in last place with the winless Saint Joseph’s-Patchogue.
