Carleton 77, Macalester 73

Northfield, Minn. — Anthony Baquero scored 21 points, including two key baskets in overtime, and Tommy Drake chipped in with 16 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double as host Carleton College used an 11-2 spurt over the final 3:44 to defeat Macalester College, 77-73, in overtime.

Carleton (6-5, 4-2 MIAC), playing in its second consecutive overtime contest, held the Scots without a field goal over the final three minutes after Macalester had forced overtime with a 10-3 run over the final four minutes of regulation. Kyle Beste (Sr./St. Louis Park, Minn.) added 19 points, six rebounds and four steals.

The Scots (4-8, 3-4 MIAC) were paced by Erik Jackson’s 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Tom Conboy added 15 points and seven rebounds and Brad Liddell drained a trio of three-pointers to tally 11 points for the Scots.

Carleton led 58-50 with 6:28 remaining after a Drake lay-up and still led by seven, 63-56, off a Baquero triple before the Scots rallied. Conboy nailed a jumper, Liddell drained a three from the right corner and Brendan Bosman scored inside, giving the Scots a 66-65 lead with 1:47 left. Mike Kootsikas made one of two free throws with 1:33 to go, and neither team would score again in regulation, forcing overtime.

In the extra session the Scots bolted to a 71-66 lead on a Liddell bomb and Bosman inside bucket. Carleton responded, as Drake scored down low, Baquero scored twice and Beste converted a steal into a fast-break lay-up.

Carleton shot 48 percent from the floor, including 54 percent in the first half. The Scots made 42 percent of their shots. The Knights out-rebounded an opponent for only the fourth time this season, moving to 4-0 when they accomplished that feat by holding a slim 36-34 edge on the glass. Both teams allowed 13 offensive rebounds, but the hosts claimed an 11-6 spread in second-chance points. Carleton committed 16 turnovers to 19 for the Scots and held a 27-22 edge in points off turnovers. The Scots were a perfect 11-for-11 from the line while Carleton, a 72 percent free-throw shooting team coming in, struggled to a 15-for-27 (56 percent) performance.
