Washington and Jefferson 73, Hood 60

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Sophomore point guard Anthony Hairston (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) led five Presidents in double figures with 13 points as Washington & Jefferson cruised past Hood (Md.), 73-60, in the opening round of The Hilton Garden Inn/Jacksons Men’s Basketball Classic on Friday evening at the Henry Memorial Center.

With the win, W&J (3-9) moves into tomorrow night’s championship game (8:00 pm) versus Chowan (N.C.), which defeated Albright, 94-91, behind 31 points from Trayvon Lathan.

The Presidents stormed out to a 19-8 lead and stretched it to 29-12 at the 6:08 mark after a lay-up by Hairston. Freshman guard Tyler Trutza (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) drilled a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to make it a 42-22 W&J halftime advantage.

Washington & Jefferson led by as many as 25 points in the second half before a late Blazer run cut the final margin to 13.

Hairston added eight rebounds and five assists, while Trutza nailed four triples for 12 points. Sophomore guards Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) both netted 11 markers, while sophomore forward Patrick Stewart (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) posted 10 points and four rebounds.

Santo Provenzano was held 10 points below his season average with 16 points to lead Hood (5-7).
