Junior Seth Cooper scored 28 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Eagles, including six rebounds and five assists. Cooper also established a new tournament record as the 6-foot-4 forward shot a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. As a team, Edgewood shot 95.5 percent (21-of-22) from the charity stripe, breaking the single-game tournament record for free throw percentage.
Edgewood College shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the contest, including 63.0 percent shooting (17-of-27) in the second half.
The first half was a back and forth affair with the teams shared momentum throughout the first half. Oneonta held a seven-point lead with 10:55 left in the half but the Eagles bounced back to score eight straight points to take the lead. The rest of the half featured two lead changes and three ties before Edgewood scored the final seven points to take the 34-27 halftime lead.
The Dragons’ Michael Reardon began the second half with a jumper, but Edgewood quickly responded. Senior Greg Blaska started a 14-0 run, as the Eagles began to pull away. Their lead did not fall below seven points the rest of the way.
Blaska added 21 points and had eight rebounds in the winning effort. Freshman Charlie Averkamp scored 11 points with six boards. Defensively, senior David Michalkiewicz led the Eagles with three of the team’s six steals.
William Heslin scored all of his 17 points in the second half and finished with nine rebounds to lead Oneonta. Anthony Negreanu scored 11 points.
