The game was tied after the first half at 30-30 as the Yellow Jackets attempted 28 free-throws and were successful on 18 of those attempts. Fortunately Kings Point shot 14-33 (42.4%) from the field, including a 5-9 performance from Hayes, to keep the game in reach.
Free-throws were again the story of the second half as the team combined for 41 shots from the charity stripe (USMMA-25, NYC Tech.-16), with the Mariners winning the battle from the line 14-9 to ultimately decide the contest.
Hayes finished the game with a team-high 22 points, on 9-16 shooting from the field and 4-9 from the free-throw line, and 12 rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench. It was the second time she broke the 20-point barrier in three games.
Kings point also got solid contributions from sophomores Andrea Carey (seven points, five rebounds), Ashley Carlisle (eight points, eight rebounds), Kaitlin Mulgrew (nine points, four rebounds) and Marisa Olson (eight points, nine rebounds).
The Yellow Jackets had Strong performances from Camille Manning and Nicola Clarke as both scored 22 points each in the game, while pulling down seven and eight boards respectively. Nichola Hall grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds in the game.
The Blue and Gray will return to action on Tuesday, January 11, when they will look to avenge an earlier loss to Skyline Conference rival Old Westbury. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Liebertz Gymnasium.
