The Thunder come out strong to start the contest, and led 53-34 at the half. Senior Jonathan Steven led the Thunder with 14 points, including three baskets from three-point range. Senior Jim Fortosis and junior Tony Bollier each added 10 points.
Wheaton did not slow down in the second half, as they cruised to a 102-77 victory. Wheaton shot an incredible 36-56 from the floor for 64%, and 9-18 from behind the arc. The Thunder also made 21-28 free throws.
The Thunder were led in scoring by Steven with 21 points on 7-10 shooting, including 4-6 from behind the arc. Bollier added 17 points, dished out three assists and came up with four steals. Fortosis was 6-8 for 15 points and he grabbed seven rebounds, including three offensive. Senior guard Jon Nielson was 4-5 from the floor and 3-4 from the line for 11 points, and his 11 assists tied a season-high and completed his double-double. Nielson also grabbed five rebounds. Junior Martin Trimiew scored nine points, as he shot 4-6 from the floor. Freshman Kent Raymond added seven points and sophomore Luke Bennett went 2-2 from the floor and 2-4 from the line for six points.
Tonight's game featured two coaches who were coaching against their alma maters. Wheaton head coach Bill Harris was a 1970 graduate of Gordon College, and Gordon College head coach Mike Schauer is a 1993 Wheaton College Graduate. Schauer was a four-year player at Wheaton and then continued as an assistant coach for Harris from 1993-2000. He is now in his third season as head coach of the Gordon College Fighting Scots.
