Randolph-Macon 79, Bridgewater (Va.) 65

ASHLAND, Va. — Junior forward Justin Wansley totaled game-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds, plus five assists, to lead the Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team to a 79-65 win over visiting Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, January 5. Wansley, who shot 13-for-20 (65.0%) from the floor, pulled down nine of his rebounds at the defensive end of the court. Also for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore forward Philip Hawley scored a career-high 19 points on 9-of-11 (81.8%) shooting, and also grabbed five rebounds and had two blocked shots. Junior guard Patrick Gill added 12 points, which included 4-of-6 (66.7%) three-point shooting, plus five assists.

With their third straight victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the ODAC. The Eagles fell to 8-3 on the season and 3-1 in the conference.

After two ties early in the contest – the last at 7-7 – a layup by Randolph-Macon’s Hawley, assisted by Gill, put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good. In the first half, their biggest lead was 13 points twice. That proved to be the halftime margin, as the hosts were up 38-25.

The advantage was never below double digits in the second half. Bridgewater trailed by just 11 points, 43-32, early in the period, but the Yellow Jackets put together a two-minute, 11-0 run to go ahead by 22 points, 54-32. That was Randolph-Macon’s biggest lead of the game.

For the Yellow Jackets, following the performances by Wansley, Hawley, and Gill, sophomore guard Stephen Sutherland scored eight points, including 2-of-4 three-pointers. Senior guard Justin Moyer distributed a game-high eight assists and had five rebounds. He had no turnovers in the game.

Leading Bridgewater was senior guard Ricky Easterling, with 21 points. He made 9-of-11 (81.8%) foul shots. Fellow senior guard Ashby Tarkington totaled 17 points on 6-of-9 (66.7%) shooting, including 5-of-6 (83.3%) three-point field goals. Junior forwards Clay Michael and Zach Butler each scored eight points. Michael also had five rebounds.
