New York City Tech 65, FDU-Florham 63

BROOKLYN, NY — Following a three-week layoff for finals and the holidays. The New York City College of Technology men’s basketball team returned to the court, topping Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham tonight at home 65-63.

City Tech junior guard Clyde Forteau (St. Raymond’s / Bronx, NY), who was held scoreless in the first half, nailed four three-pointers in the second half en route to a season-high 17 points to lead the team in only their second non-conference win of the season. Senior preseason All-American center Shacun Malave (DeWitt Clinton / Bronx, NY) also scored 17 points and grabbed a team season-high 16 rebounds for City Tech (6-4). Both starters went 1-2 from the free throw line within the last 30 seconds of the contest to give FDU-Florham continued life.

The Yellow Jackets actually expanded a two-point halftime lead (30-28) to 14 with 10-53 remaining in the game, but allowed the Devils to get within one point twice in the last minute as well. FDU-Florham (5-5) sophomore guard Pierre Schmitt (Park Ridge / Park Ridge, NJ) had a chance to tie the game at the charity stripe with :07 left, down 64-62, but he missed the first of two free throws. Still, Schmitt came off the bench to lead the Devils with 13 points on the night.

The home team held Devils center Chris Hendershot (Walkill Valley / Vernon, NJ), a 25-point point per game scorer, to only 11 points (3-11 FG) and six rebounds, moreover, the senior also missed a free throw in the last thirty seconds of the contest to seal FDU’s fate. Senior forward Jeff Hemschoot (Red Bank Catholic / Little Silver, NJ) was also held to 12 points and only two boards by the stingy City Tech defensive effort.

Yellow Jacket senior guard Nkosi Hamilton (August Martin / Queens, NY) also reached double figures, scoring 11 points, that included a three-pointer in that put the squad up 50-41, forcing the Devils to call a timeout and regroup with just over 12 minutes remaining.

Next up for City Tech is CUNYAC rival CCNY on Saturday, January 8, at the Klitgord Center at 2:00 pm.
