Capital broke away from a close game midway through the first half, and took a nine point lead (34-25) with 1:48 to play on a Mark Tinklenberg three-pointer.
John Carroll scored the final four points of the opening period to make the score 34-29 at intermission.
Continuing the momentum established at the end of the first half, the Blue Streaks opening the second on a 14-5 run to take a 43-39 lead with 15:20 remaining. Although John Carroll would never again relinquish the lead, the Blue Streaks never created a cushion of more than eight points over the final 15 minutes.
Capital closed to within one point on several occasions, the last of which was at 65-64 with 5:12 to play when David Kalb’s lay-up cut the margin to a single score.
From there, John Carroll would make four of its six field goal attempts, including two three-pointers by Justin Ragor and one by Michael Grogan. Also aiding the cause were three free throws by Grogan in the final 38 seconds to seal the win.
The Blue Streaks, ranked #3 in the latest d3hoops.com national poll, won their 31st consecutive home game dating back to the 2001-02 season, and their 12th consecutive game dating back to last year.
John Carroll (11-0, 5-0 OAC) was led by Grogan’s game-high 20 points. Drew Salata added 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Brandon Mimes (13) and Pete Moran (10) also reached double figures for the Blue Streaks, who shot 14-28 (.500) from the field in the second half, including 5-11 (.455) from three-point range.
Capital (7-4, 3-2 OAC), which was playing for the first time since December 18th, received a strong contribution from Tinklenberg, who scored a career-high 19 points off the bench. He was 5-8 from the field – all from three-point range – and 4-4 from the free throw line. David Johnson added 13 points and five assists, while Kalb added 12 points.
