La Crosse, WI — The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team picked up its first WIAC victory of the season with a 67-56 win over UW-River Falls Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. Joe Werner led the Eagles with his fourth double-double of the season and seventh of his career. He scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, including nine offensive. Chris Ask added 11 points for UW-L while Joe Bemis and Chris Fehrenbach each had 10 points.
Hans Hoeg came off the bench for UW-River Falls to score 17 points, including hitting all eight of his free throw attempts. Eric Kossoris added 10 points for the Falcons.
UW-River Falls led 19-18 in the first half before UW-L went on a 14-3 run and 34-24 at halftime. The Eagles led 45-29 with 14:50 left in the game before the Falcons cut the lead to 50-43 with 8:34 remaining. UW-River Falls got within four at 54-50 with 5:46 left, but UW-L went on a 13-6 run to finish the game.
UW-L shot 48.1% from the field, including 37.5% (three-of-eight) from three-point range. The Eagles were 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the free throw line. UW-L outrebounded UW-River Falls, 43-26.
UW-River Falls shot 32.7% from the field, including 26.1% (six-of-23) from three-point range. The Falcons were 14-of-17 (82.4%) at the line.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, January 8 at UW-Stevens Point while UW-River Falls hosts UW-Whitewater.
