Frostburg State 93, Washington and Jefferson 69

FROSTBURG, Md. — Jason Peterson scored 12 of his game-high 24 points during an eight-minute stretch of the first half to lift Frostburg State to a 93-69 victory over Washington & Jefferson in men’s basketball action on Tuesday evening.

The Presidents (2-9) held a 14-10 lead early on after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley), but the Bobcats (6-3) reeled off 29 of the next 36 points to claim a 39-21 advantage with 5:28 left in the first half.

W&J narrowed the gap to 45-31 at halftime after a pair of late baskets by freshman center Tony Lewis (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Orange) and two free throws from sophomore point guard Anthony Hairston (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic).

Hairston’s lay-up at the 17:33 mark of the second half closed the Presidents to within 10 points (49-39), but FSU took control of the game with a 20-10 spurt over the next seven minutes. The Bobcats increased their lead to as many as 30 points (83-53) and cruised to their sixth victory of the season.

Sophomore guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) led Washington & Jefferson with 16 points and four rebounds, while Lewis netted a career-high 15 points and also grabbed five boards. Studer was the only other President in double figures with 13.

W&J shot 45 percent (26-of-58), but made just 2-of-16 shots from three-point range. W&J was out-rebounded by a 42-32 margin and committed 21 turnovers.

Peterson made 10-of-16 shots from the floor and added five rebounds and three steals to lead Frostburg State. Dustin Long and Victor Arana both added 12 points for the Bobcats, who connected on 53 percent (39-of-73) of their shot attempts.

W&J hosts The Hilton Garden Inn/Jacksons Men’s Basketball Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Henry Memorial Center. Friday’s action begins with Albright and Chowan battling at 6:00 pm followed by the Presidents taking on Hood (Md.) at 8:00 pm.
