Moravian 70, Delaware Valley 68

DOYLESTOWN, Pa — Steve Wenderfer’s layup with 0.8 seconds remaining lifted Moravian College to a 70-68 victory over host Delaware Valley College in a non-conference game.

It was the first game for both teams since the calendar turned to 2005 and it showed as the two combined for 61 fouls, 46 turnovers and 26 missed foul shots. There were also 10 ties and eight lead changes, including three lead changes and two ties in the final 25 seconds.

Delaware Valley (3-5) held a 64-63 lead heading into the final minute when Moravian’s Justin Chestnut stole a pass, went down the court and hit a layup while being fouled. His free throw culminated the three-point play and gave the Greyhounds a 66-64 advantage with 25 seconds to go.

The Aggies went back down and tied the game six seconds later as Randall Graves drove into the paint and connected on a layup. Four seconds after that, Chestnut was fouled and the freshman hit both of his free throws for a 68-66 Greyhound lead.

Graves was fouled while driving to the basket with 10.1 seconds remaining and the senior connected on both of his foul shots to tie the game once again. Moravian (4-7) came down court and maintained possession as the ball went out of bounds with 3.6 seconds to go. Michael Clemente inbounded to Wenderfer, who backed into the lane and made his layup for the game-winning basket.

Moravian led by as many as 13, 28-15, in the first half and took a 36-33 advantage into the intermission. The Aggies did not hold a lead until early in the second half as a 7-0 run – keyed by Meril Branch’s five points – gave them a 44-40 lead with 14 minutes remaining.

Branch paced Delaware Valley with 18 points, including 12-for-16 shooting from the foul line. Branch also added seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Maurice Slaughter notched 12 points and seven boards while Mike Ezell came off the bench to contribute 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Graves also reached double figures with 11 points.

Chestnut led the Greyhounds with 17 points while Steve Wenderfer finished with 14 points, nine rebounds. Brandon Zaleski and Zach Zsilavecz each scored 12 points before fouling out.
