Christopher Newport 102, St. Mary's (Md.) 79

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Christopher Newport's men's basketball team cruised to a 102-79 victory over St. Mary's to win the 9th Annual Captains Shootout Tuesday evening.

CNU forced 15 turnovers and converted them into 27 points and outscored the Sea Hawks 36-9 in bench points.

The Captains led at the break 51-36 on 17-of-33 (52%) shooting from the field, 7-of-15 (47%) on three's and 10-of-11 (91%) from the free throw line. CNU held St. Mary's to 11-of-29 (38%) shooting from floor, 3-of-11 (27%) on three's and 11-of-17 (65%) from the charity stripe.

The second half saw the Captains out score the Sea Hawks 51-43. CNU finished the half 18-of-32 (56%) from the floor, 4-of-8 on three's and 11-of-16 (69%) from the free throw line. St. Mary's finished the half 13-of-29 (45%) from the field, 6-of-13 (46%) on three's and 11-of-14 (79%) from the free throw line.

For the game, the Sea Hawks finished 24-of-58 (41%) from the floor, 9-of-24 (38%) and 22-of-31 (71%) from the free throw line, the Captains finished 35-of-65 (54%) from the field, 11-of-23 (48%) on three's and 21-of-27 (78%) from the charity stripe.

Jeffrey Turner led St. Mary's with 30 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 11-of-13 from the free throw line and finished with eight rebounds.. Ben Stewart added 16 points, John Dewey added 12 and Dan Engelstad added 10 points.

The Captains were led by Jeremy Romeo's 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting including 6-of-9 on three's. Brandon Brooks, off the bench, added 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Korey Lewis added 15 points and six boards, Roderic Carey finished with 14 points and Dont'a Selden added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Steward and Turner earned All-Tournament honors along with New Jersey City's Mark Washington. Brooks and Lewis were also named to the All-Tournament team and Romeo was named the Tournament's MVP.

St. Mary's is now 5-6 and the Captains improve to 8-2. CNU returns to action this Sunday as they host Salisbury with tip-set for 4 pm.
