Wheaton (Ill.) 94, Curry 63

Williamstown, Mass. — The Wheaton College men’s basketball team returned to the court on Monday afternoon with a 94-63 win over Curry College (2-4) in the opening game of the Williams College “Purple and Gold Invitational”. Today’s victory over Curry (2-4), was Wheaton’s (8-1) first game since Dec. 11. With today’s win Wheaton advances to the Championship Game of the “Purple and Gold Invitational at 8 PM (EST) on Tuesday night. Wheaton will face either host Williams College (10-1) or Southern Vermont College (0-7) after those two teams face each other in Monday’s second game.

Wheaton jumped out to the lead early in its win over Curry, as the Thunder held a 48-27 advantage at halftime. Wheaton was impressive in the first half as the Thunder shot 22-of-28 from the field in the opening half for a 78.6% field goal percentage at halftime. The Thunder shot 68.4% (39-57) from the field for the game, with a 38.9% (7-18) effort from three-point range and 75% (9-12) from the free throw line. Wheaton held a commanding 33-11 advantage in rebounding with a 9-2 edge on the offensive glass.

Senior forward Jonathan Steven sparked Wheaton’s sensational first half, scoring all of his 19 points for the game in the first half. Steven shot 8-for-10 from the field in the first half and was 8-for-13 from the floor in the game, with a 3-for-6 effort from three-point range and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Michael Fiddler came off the bench to contribute 15 points on 7-for-7 shooting from the field. Senior forward Martin Trimiew scored 14 points, with a 5-for-6 effort from the field and three assists. Freshman Kent Raymond was the fourth Thunder player to reach double digits in scoring with 11 points, including three field goals from behind the three-point arc and five assists. Senior guard Jon Nielson scored seven points and found his teammates for a game-high 10 assists.

Curry shot 47.2% (25-53) from the field, with 23.1% (3-13) from three-point range and 76.9% (10-13) from the free throw line. Forward Michael Mohrin led the Colonels with 18 points and four rebounds. Marcus Jones and Stephen Prescod each scored 13 points, while Tim Jones added nine points.
