Washington and Lee 79, Washington College 74

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team used a late 8-0 spurt to take the lead for good in a 79-74 victory over visiting Washington College in the championship game of the Washington and Lee Tournament this evening in Lexington, VA. The Generals improved to 2-9 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 4-5 with the loss.

The Shoremen led by as many as seven points in the first half, but the Generals took a 37-36 lead into the intermission. Washington and Lee opened up an 11-point lead in the second half, but Washington came back to knot the score at 61-61 with 5:00 to play. The Generals then went on their crucial 8-0 run to go up 69-61 on two free-throws by Tournament MVP Chris Halkitis with 2:34 to play. The Shoremen twice cut the lead to three in the final minutes, but could get no closer as the Generals made six-of-eight free throws over the last 46 seconds of the game to seal the win.

Halkitis finished the game with a game-high and career-high 27 points as well as six rebounds. Femi Kusimo joined Halkitis on the All-Tournament Team for the Generals and added 12 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high four steals in the win. Mike Stuart provided W&L with 18 points.

Junior forward Jonathan Webb led the Shoremen with 20 points and brought down six rebounds. Junior guard Kyle Stem added 18 points, while senior guard John "China" Alexander scored 12 points and brought down a game-high 11 rebounds. Alexander's 11 boards also matched his career high. Sophomore forward Joe Breslin, who was the Shoremen's representative on the All-Tournament Team, tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.
