St. Mary's (Md.) 67, New Jersey City 54

Newport News, VA — The St. Mary's College men's basketball team advanced to the championship contest of the Christopher Newport University Captains Shootout on Monday evening with a 67-54 victory over New Jersey City University. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 5-5 overall on the season, while the Gothic Knights fall to 6-5 overall with the loss.

The contest was tied at halftime, 28-28. The Gothic Knights opened the second half with a 5-0 run to claim a 33-28 lead but the Seahawks quickly answered with two baskets by sophomore point guard Dan Engelstad and a free throw by freshman swingman T.J. Jordan with 16:20 remaining in the contest.

St. Mary's College took the lead for good in the contest with a three-point field goal from Jordan with 14:20 remaining and never looked back, opening up as much as a 14-point lead in the contest.

For New Jersey City, Mark Washington posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs. Reserve Ben Balcom was the only other NJCU player in double figures with ten points.

For the Seahawks, Jordan scored 15 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds with four steals and three assists. Junior guard Ben Stewart also scored 15 points in the contest, while senior forward Jeffrey Turner added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Seahawks will play in the championship contest on Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. against the winner of the Christopher Newport/Rutgers-Camden contest. The Gothic Knights will face the loser of that contest in the consolation game on Tuesday evening, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
