Methodist falls to 4-3 with the defeat, while Virginia Wesleyan remains undefeated at 10-0.
Virginia Wesleyan turned a close game into a rout thanks in part to forward Brandon Adair. The junior forward accounted for all Marlin points in an 8-0 run that gave Virginia Wesleyan a 20-7 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Four straight 3-point baskets, including two from Peter Warren, increased the Marlin lead to 34-17 at the 4:06 mark.
Methodist converted only one of its first 11 shots, while Virginia Wesleyan shot an impressive 57 percent from the field, including 64 percent from 3-point range, to take a 41-23 lead at halftime.
Warren drained two straight 3-point baskets at the start of the second half, and a lay-up by Adair gave Virginia Wesleyan its largest lead of the game, 53-25 with 14:40 remaining. The closest that the Monarchs would cut the lead was 19 points on two straight Sam Porter lay-ups to make the Marlin lead 57-38 with 8:11 remaining.
Warren scored 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range to pace Virginia Wesleyan, while Adair scored 16 points and Ton Ton Balenga added 13 points. For Methodist, Porter scored 12 points and Robert Lee scored nine points. Eugene Grant added eight points for the Monarchs.
Methodist hits the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. showdown at Hampden-Sydney.
