Christopher Newport 93, Rutgers-Camden 54

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Christopher Newport's men's basketball team began the 2005 year on the right foot, defeating Rutgers-Camden 93-54 in the semifinals of the Captains Shootout Monday night.

The Captains used a variety of sets and forced 15 Rutgers-Camden turnovers. CNU scored 21 points off of those turnovers. The Captains bench also out scored RCU's 42-17.

CNU led at the break 41-21. The Captains shot 15-of-36 (42%) from the floor, 6-of-14 (43%) and 5-of-8 (63%) from the free throw line. Rutgers-Camden finished 7-of-29 (24%) from the field, 1-of-5 on three's and 6-of-11 (55%) from the charity stripe.

The second half was much of the same as CNU out scored RCU 52-33. The Captains shot 21-of-36 (58%) from the field, 7-of-14 on three's and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. RCU finished 11-of-35 (31%) from the floor, 2-of-9 (22%) on three's and 9-of-12 (75%) from the free throw line.

For the game, Rutgers-Camden shot 18-of-64 (28%) from the field, 3-of-14 (21%) on three's and 15-of-23 (65%) from the free throw line. The Captains finished 36-of-72 (50%) from the floor, 13-of-28 (46%) on three's and 8-of-12 from the free throw line.

RCU was led by Tyrone Rucker with 18 points and Amir Fantroyal added 10 points and six boards.

The Captains were led by Korey Lewis with 20 points and 13 rebounds, he was one of five in double-figures. Jeremy Romeo finished with 15 points, Jordan Short added 11 points, and Dont'a Selden and Steven Murrer added 10 points each. Blake Brookman finished with 10 assists.

RCU falls to 1-9 and will return to action tomorrow as they take on New Jersey City in the Third Place game in the Captains Shootout with tip set for 6 pm. The Captains, 7-2 overall, will take on St. Mary's (MD) in the championship game at 8 pm.
