Averett 73, Lynchburg 57

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men’s basketball team improved to 3-0 at home this season Monday with a 73-57 win over Lynchburg College in the Grant Center. The Cougars never trailed in the contest, as they avenged an earlier loss at Lynchburg on November 23.

Averett (3-4) jumped out to an early 14-2 lead seven minutes into the contest. However, the Hornets (5-5) answered with a 13-4 run to close to within 18-15 with 9:20 remaining in the first half. Not to be outdone, the Cougars rattled off a 17-4 spurt to close the half and enjoy a 35-19 halftime advantage. Cory Williams netted seven points to lead the Cougars in the stanza, while teammates Billy Gardner and Andrew Boor each added six.

Averett led by as many as 19 in the final period, as the Hornets could get no closer than eight. Averett held the Hornets to 36 percent shooting and outrebounded their opponents 43-27. Additionally, Averett added 34 points in the paint against the larger Lynchburg interior.

Boor led the Cougars with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting. He was 8-of-10 from the free throw line and added five rebounds. Gardner followed with 12 points and nine boards, while Cameron Brown netted 10.

The Hornets had a pair of double figure scorers, led by Ryan Pehanick’s 17 points. Matt Sweeney contributed 15 points to the Lynchburg cause. However, the Hornets committed 20 turnovers that led to 18 Averett points.

The Cougars return to action on Friday at Center Valley, PA, as they face the host team in the DeSales University Tournament.
