Trinity (Texas) 72, Sewanee 53

MEMPHIS, TN — Trinity's men's basketball team defeated University of the South-Sewanee 72-53 on Sunday afternoon to win its third straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
The Tigers advance to the NCAA playoffs, earning the conference's automatic bid. The NCAA will release the official tournament brackets later today.

Trinity (22-6) led 30-26 at the half, but pulled away from Sewanee in the second half with a 42-27 advantage. Trinity opened up with a 10-3 advantage to start the game, but Sewanee hung around, cut the lead to two at the eight-minute mark, and then again with 1:40 to go until halftime.

Trinity outscored Sewanee 9-2 to start the second half, increasing the lead to 11 points. Holding on to a nine-point lead (46-37), Trinity scored 20 unanswered points to break the game open, and didn't allow a field goal in a 10-minute stretch.

Sean Devins led the team with nine points, and a game-high 10 rebounds. Devins also recorded seven blocks for the second straight game, and was named the SCAC Tournament MVP for the second straight year.

Jason Morris paced Trinity with 16 points in the game, knocking down 6-10 shots and grabbing four assists. Peter Murray finished with nine points and five boards, as well as three assists. Murray and Morris each earned All-SCAC Tournament honors as well.

Three other players scored in double figures in the game. Andy Bates hit 4-7 shots, Chad Stroberg hit 3-5 from the field, and Ross Burt knocked in 4-6 shots as all three players scored 10 points. The trio also hit two three-pointers each, combining to shoot 6-10 from distance.

Joey Garcia led Sewanee with 12 points, and was the only player in double figures for the Tigers.

Trinity will await the official announcement for the NCAA playoffs later today, which will determine their opponent for the start of the postseason.
