Washington U. 69, Chicago 60

ST. LOUIS, Mo.- — Washington University's men's basketball team defeated the University of Chicago, 69-60, on Saturday at the WU Field House.   With the win, the Bears finished third in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

WU jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held Chicago scoreless for the first 5:49. Junior Mike Grunst scored back-to-back buckets in the post to open the game and classmate Scott Stone scored on a pull-up jumper from the free throw line.

The Maroons missed their first 11 shots before senior Mike Dolezal scored in the post with just under 12 minutes to play in the half. Freshman Nate Hainje converted on a three-pointer and junior Jason Hicks added a lay-up for a 7-0 UC run.

Trailing 14-11, the Bears responded with an 8-0 run, led by freshman Troy Ruth's four points. The Bears' lead hovered around eight points for the remainder of the half, and Stone knocked down a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give WU a 31-22 edge.

Senior Anthony Hollins led all scorers with 10 points in the first frame, while Grunst added six points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Bears extended their lead to 16 points early in the second half for their largest margin of the game. However, Chicago cut the Bears' lead to eight points (59-51) when senior Brian Cuttica hit a 25-foot three-pointer from the left wing with 2:36 on the clock. Cuttica hit again from downtown to trim the deficit to four points (61-57) with 1:20 remaining, and WU whistled for a timeout. UC drew within four points again at 64-60 but would get no closer.

Hollins added six points in the last period. He caught an alley-oop from Stone for a two handed slam and later added a reverse two-handed dunk along the baseline, giving him a team-high 16 points and four rebounds. Ruths added 10 points off the bench. Junior Clay Carmody led the Maroons (10-15, 6-8 UAA) with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

WU closes out the 2004-05 season with a 16-9 overall record and an 8-6 UAA mark.
