Wheaton (Ill.) 79, Carthage 70

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (12-13, 6-8 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) closed out its 2005 season on Saturday, February 26 with a 79-70 loss to CCIW-opponent and No. 9 Wheaton College (Ill., 20-5, 10-4 CCIW) at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Redmen led by three points at halftime, 42-39, after falling behind by 12 points, 18-6, at 13:59. The Thunder used a 15-2 run at the start of the second half to take a 10-point lead, 54-44, at 14:45. Carthage, in turn, went on a 13-2 run to re-take the lead, 57-56, at 11:01. The lead seasawed for the next seven minutes. The Redmen’s last lead was 66-65 at 5:52. Wheaton (Ill.) took the lead for good, 67-66, at 4:13 and iced the game from the free-throw line, en route to a nine-point victory, 79-70. Wheaton (Ill.) shot 50 percent (26-52), while the Redmen shot 40 percent (22-55), 56 percent in the first half (14-25) and just 27 percent (8-30) in the second period. The Thunder’s Jonathan Stevens scored a game-high 30 points on 10-of-20 field goals and eight-of-10 free throws, along with 11 rebounds. Tony Bollier had 16 points, and Martin Trimiew added 12 points and five rebounds. Pat Kalamatas topped the Redmen with 15 points and eight boards. Brian Schlemm had 12 points. Kevin Menard had 11 points and five rebounds, while Malik Imani chipped in 10 points.
