Southwestern 70, DePauw 57

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The DePauw men's basketball season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament as the Tigers fell to top-seed Southwestern by a 70-57 score.


The Tigers finished the season with a 12-13 overall record, while the Pirates imrpoved to 20-6 and advanced to the SCAC semifinals.

Southwestern led by as many as six in the early stages of the first half and still held a 26-22 advantage with 5:15 left in the half before DePauw scored 10 straight on the way to a 33-27 halftime lead.

The Pirates used an 11-0 run early in the first half to turn a five-point deficit into a six-point lead at 43-37 and they wouldn't trail from that point forward. DePauw closed to within two at 47-45, but the Pirates scored 10 straight and kept the lead in double digits.

Austin Brown paced the Tigers with 17 points, while Todd Capes, Stephen Schott and Alex Stewart each grabbed four rebounds. Joey Hanger dished out four assists in his final collegiate contest.

Robert Cates paced Southwestern with 17 points, followed by Jamonn Little with 14 and Brandon Daniels with 12. Dan Slezak led the Pirates with six rebounds as Southwestern held a 35-25 advantage on the boards.

The Pirates shot 48.9 percent for the game including 54 percent in the second half, while holding DePauw to just 38 percent shooting and 29 percent in the second half.
