Haverford 71, Johns Hopkins 53

HAVERFORD, Pa. — Senior forward Mark Gabriel scored 23 points and classmate Matt Stein added 19, including the 1,000th point of his career, as host Haverford pulled away from a 32-21 halftime lead for its first postseason win since the 1976-77 season.
Juniors Jeremy Bass (13 points), Johnny Elefterakis (seven assists) and Jason Polykoff (four steals) also had big games for the Fords (14-11), who face Centennial tournament host Franklin & Marshall (19-6) in the Conference semifinals Saturday at 4 p.m. Gettysburg (16-9) and Ursinus (16-9) meet in the other Centennial semifinal at 2 p.m.
The Blue Jays (14-11), whose last lead was 13-12 midway through the first half, were led by sophomore guard T.J. Valerio's 19 points and sophomore center Danny Nawrocki's Conference-record 16 rebounds.
Bass moved past 1994 Fords graduate Joe Rulewich (1,011) into ninth-place in career scoring at Haverford with 1,014 points, four points more than Stein's new total (1,010). Entering the night, Haverford's last playoff win was a 70-68 triumph at F&M in the Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division semifinals on Feb. 24, 1977.
On Wednesday, Gabriel became Haverford's first First-Team All-Centennial men's basketball player since point guard Jamal Elliott in 1995-96. Elefterakis and Bass were named to the All-CC Second and Honorable Mention teams, respectively. Thursday night's victory also capped its final basketball game in 48 seasons at Alumni Field House, which opened for the 1957-58 season. The Fords will move into the Douglas B. Gardner '83 Integrated Athletic Center gymnasium for home games beginning next season.
