Webster 81, Maryville (Mo.) 76

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Maryville University men's basketball team put forth a strong effort in their final conference game of the regular season. The Saints were defeated 81-76 by St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular season champion, Webster University, as they drop to 10-15 overall and 7-7 in conference play. The Gorloks improve to 16-9 on the season and 12-2 in the SLIAC.
Maryville trailed the entire game, but the Saints overcame a 10-point halftime deficit and out scored Webster 41-36 in the second half. Sophomore Jason Rezabek would hit a layup at 13:19 in the second half to bring Maryville within three points of the lead. The Gorloks would maintain control, however, and led by as many as 13 points in the final four minutes of the game.
The Saints, playing without two of their top four scorers, would finish 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute, but Webster would also finish strong. Maryville was down by seven points with seven seconds remaining on the clock, but junior Tim Elwell hit a running jumper at the buzzer to cut the final margin to five points.
Rezabek, who has seen limited minutes lately due to injury, led Maryville with 18 points and was 6-of-8 (.750) from the free throw line. Junior Matt Regan added 11 points, a team-high eight rebounds and three steals, while Elwell finished with seven points and six assists. Seniors Marcus Henderson and Matt Damrell also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Freshman Casey Holland helped the Saints on the glass by pulling down seven rebounds. Rezabek and Damrell each finished the game with five boards a piece.
Tim Timmerman hit 4-of-6 (.667) shots from three-point range and led Webster with 18 points and four rebounds. Steve Waterkotte tallied 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Darrin Hoggatt and Marshall Newman had 12 and 11 points respectively. Benny Roberts also chipped in for the Gorloks with nine rebounds and six assists.
Maryville will return to action on Friday, when they face #2 seeded Blackburn College in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 pm at Webster University.
