Salve Regina 67, Gordon 60

NEWPORT, R.I. — Salve Regina University men's basketball advances to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semifinals with a 67-60 win over visiting Gordon College at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

The game featured seven lead changes in the first half, none in the second, as Salve Regina took the lead for good on a floating jumper by Andrew Rego [FR/Little Compton, R.I.] with 2:37 remaining in the first. Lay-ups by Chris Collier [SR/Exeter, N.H.] and Matt Grendal [SO/Foxboro, Mass.] gave the Seahawks a five-point cushion at intermission.

Jon Hazzard [SO/North Kingstown, R.I.] led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on 7-for-15 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. A Hazzard fast break dunk with 12:53 left in the game gave Salve Regina its largest lead of the contest (47-32), but a jumper by Justin Kaufman [FR/Redding, Conn.] culminated a 17-5 Fighting Scot run that cut the Gordon deficit to three (52-49 with 5:34 remaining).

Hazzard sank a jumper and two free throws before a Kaufman three-pointer and Jerry Logan [SO/Marietta, Ga.] lay-up narrowed the gap to two (56-54 with 2:08 remaining). With the score the same a minute later, Hazzard had the ball with his back to the basket and found Matt Coute [JR/Somerset, Mass.] open behind the arc. The junior guard swished a three-pointer and the Seahawks maintained at least a five-point lead the rest of the way. Salve Regina (16-9) and Gordon (15-11) combined for 14 points in the final minute.

Logan led four Scots in double figures with 13 points; Mike Herr [SO/Lampeter, Pa.] added a dozen while Kaufman and Jon Marstaller [FR/Naples, Maine] both had 11 points. Coute and Collier finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Seahawks who now travel to top-seed Endicott College on Thursday, February 22 (8:00PM) for a semifinal contest.

Endicott, defending conference champions, ended Salve Regina's season a year ago in a quarterfinal meeting; the Gulls enjoyed a 15-point victory over the Seahawks in Beverly, Mass., during their regular-season meeting on January 15, 2005.

Roger Williams (14-11) hosts Curry (15-10) in the other CCC semifinal.
