Willamette 90, Pacific Lutheran 83

TACOMA, Wash. — Willamette University used an 14-5 run midway through the second half to build a 13 point lead and the Bearcats went on to defeat a determined Pacific Lutheran University team, 90-83, in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game tonight in Olson Auditorium.

The game was postponed from Feb. 4 because of a power outage late in the women's game.

"I am not disappointed," said PLU head coach Dave Harshman. "I was really pleased with our effort."

The Lutes started a line-up of four guards and a wing and utilized a full-court press as the game got underway. The Lutes jumped out to a 14-3 lead four minutes into the contest.

Willamette came back to tie the score at 18-each with 12:42 left, then used a six point run to take a 34-29 lead with 4:52 remaining. The Bearcats held a 41-39 lead at intermission.

After Drew Cardwell's jumper with 15:39 left, Willamette held a 53-49 advantage. The Bearcats scored 14 of the next 19 points to for a 67-54 lead. The Lutes cut the margin to six points on three different occasions but couldn't pull any closer.

Cardwell poured in 29 points on 12-19 shooting from the field including 3-7 from the three point line, while Landon Heidenreich tallied 24 points -- hitting 9 of 13 field goal attempts, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. Both are career highs.

John Olinger led Willamette with 21 points, Jason Luchterhand had 20 points and 14 rebounds, CJ Stuvland 19 and Todd Lewis finished with 17 points and 22 rebounds. The Bearcats outrebounded the Lutes 52-26.
