Mount St. Mary 97, Yeshiva 70

NEWBURGH, NY — Sophomore guard Mike Hoyt (Florida, NY) set a new Mount Saint Mary College record for the most points scored in a game as he tallied 42 points to lead the second-seeded Blue Knights past No. 7 seed Yeshiva University, 97-70, in the quarterfinals of the Skyline Conference Tournament at the Kaplan Center on Tuesday.

Hoyt was 12-for-15 from the floor for the game, including 8-for-10 from downtown. He also made 10 of 12 shots at the foul line to go along with five assists and three rebounds. Hoyt, who scored 40 points against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on February 2, breaks the previous Mount single-game scoring record set by Andrew Cameron (Poughkeepsie, NY) against Centenary College on February 20, 1997.

In tonight’s game, the Blue Knights raced to a 49-31 lead at intermission by shooting 62.1 percent from the floor. Mount Saint Mary made 61.1 percent of its field-goal attempts for the game and shot 73.7 percent as a team from downtown in the contest (14-for-19).

The Maccabees made 17 three-pointers in the game and were led by sophomore Roy Goldstein (Beer-Sheva, Israel), who connected on six shots from behind the arc while scoring 20 points. Sophomore Ian Ribald (Dallas, TX) was 5-for-9 from downtown for 15 points.

For Mount Saint Mary, senior Roberto King (Hempstead, NY) scored 14 points. Senior Kenny Lane (East Meadow, NY) chipped in with 11 points.

MSMC improves to 15-10 on the year. The Blue Knights also advance to the tourney semifinals and will host No. 3 seed U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (16-10), which defeated No. 6 SUNY Old Westbury by the score of 62-58 in quarterfinal action this evening. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.
