After trailing 32-25 at halftime in the first round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament, the number fourth seeded Clark University men’s basketball team came from behind to defeat the fifth seed United States Coast Guard Academy, 71-58. The Cougars started the second half with a 19-7 run and had a 5-point lead, 44-39 with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game. Junior Tim Dutille (Sunapee, NH/Lebanon) pushed the lead to 52-43 with 7:35 to play and the Cougars finished the game going 12-for-14 from the line en route to their fifth straight victory. Coast Guard, who shot 44.4 percent in the first half, was held to just 27.8 percent in the second half. The Cougars shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the second half while going 4-for-10 from long range and 14-for-17 from the line. Dutille had a monster game for Clark with game-highs of 26 points and 14 rebounds. He was 11-for-21 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line. Graduate-student Adam Miller (Shrewsbury, MA/Worcester Academy) chipped in seven points and 12 rebounds. First-year Craig Johnson (Medford, OR/South Medford) led Coast Guard with 21 points and seven rebounds. He was 9-for-12 from the floor. Classmate Jeff Prebeck (NAPS Columbus, IN/Columbus East) added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Bears, who finished the season 13-11. Sophomore Asher Cowan (Petersborough, NH/Cushing Academy) chipped in nine points including two key three-pointers. Clark, who improved to 11-14, have won six out of the last seven. This marks the third time the Cougars have defeated Coast Guard this month. Clark will travel to cross-town rival and the number one seeded WPI on Friday, February 25 at 5:30 pm.
