Carthage 79, North Park 57

CHICAGO, Ill. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (12-12, 6-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) snapped a five-game losing streak on Monday, February 21 with a 79-57 President’s Day win over CCIW-opponent North Park University (4-19, 0-12 CCIW) at the North Park Gym in Chicago, Ill. Carthage jumped out to a 10-point lead, 23-13, at 10:19. The Vikings cut the lead to eight points on a couple of occasions before the Redmen opened up a 13-point lead, 32-19, at 5:38. North Park closed to within seven, 35-28, at 2:08, and the Redmen led by nine at the break, 37-28. The Vikings trimmed the lead to four points, 46-42, at 14:52 second half before the Redmen used a 13-0 run to go up by 17, 59-42, at 11:21. Mike Hart connected on three field goals in that 13-0 run. Carthage bumped its lead to 20 points, 77-57 in the final minute of the game and went on to win by 22, 79-57. Carthage shot 62 percent (32-62), including 68 percent in the second half, while North Park shot 43 percent (23-54). Brian Schlemm topped the Redmen with 21 points on seven-of-13 field goals, including four-of-six from three-point range. Mike Hart had 19 points and six rebounds. Kyle Jeffery had 17 points and nine rebounds, while Kevin Menard added 13 points and six boards. Brent Mathisen led the Vikings with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Redmen conclude their season on Saturday, February 26 (7:30 p.m.) by playing host to conference-opponent Wheaton College (Ill.) at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis.
