Shenandoah 65, Methodist 63

WINCHESTER, Va. - — What a finish.

Shenandoah University got a game winning three-pointer from senior http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=59"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Chris Jenkins as time expired Sunday afternoon, giving his club as 65-63 USA South Conference victory over regular season champion Methodist College.

The win created a three-way tie for third in the league between Shenandoah (14-11, 6-6 USA South), Averett and Greensboro. Averett wins the tie-breaker by virtue of its two wins over GC, while GC gets the fourth seed because it beat the Hornets in both meetings this season.

Shenandoah and Greensboro will meet in Thursday's quarterfinal round game at 7:00. This contest will complete day one play - No. 2 CNU plays No. 7 NC Wesleyan at 3 while No. 3 Averett and No. 6 Ferrum square off at 5:00.

Jenkins' game winning trey was set up after Eugene Grant missed the front end of a one and one with seven seconds remaining. Jenkins got the long rebound and gave the ball to classmate http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=401"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Chris Rhone, who eventually was trapped at the three-point line.

Rhone got the ball to Jenkins at the top of the key with two seconds left, and Jenkins shot hit nothing but net as time expired.

The Hornets victory ruined a great comeback by regular season champion Methodist (18-7, 10-2 USA South). The Monarchs trailed by 14 points at the break and by 10 with just over 16 minutes remaining before ralling to tie the contest at 56-56 with 6:36 left.

The two teams traded the lead four times and were tied on one other occasion in the remaining time, the last when Jenkins drained the three-ball.

MC senior Sam Porter had 16 points and 17 boards, while Robert Lee keyed a hailstorm of second half three pointers with four of his club nine second half 'treys'. He finished with 13 points.

Junior http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=415"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Onyie Onunaku led SU with 16 points while Rhone had 13, Jenkins 12 and freshman http://www.su.edu/athletics/mb/players.cfm?rid=489"> color="#CC0000" size="1"> Jeremiah Lawrence 11.
