Lehman , the CUNYAC North Division Champions, dominated from the opening tip, with senior all-star forward Miguel Jorge (Bronx, NY) leading the way with 12 points on four treys and junior center Sekani Francis (Kennedy / Bronx, NY), getting nine points and six rebounds, en route to a 30-8 first half lead with 10:25 remaining. Jorge finished the game with 28 points, 24 of which came on a CUNYAC Tournament record eight three-pointers. Francis, CUNYAC’s 2004-05 Player of the Year, collected 14 points and 17 caroms in the contest.
Lightning junior point guard Willie Vargas (Clinton / Bronx, NY) also set a new CUNYAC Tournament standard with 15 assists (17), topping the record of 12 by current York assistant coach Nathan Reeves set in 1997 in their aforementioned 114-76 semifinal win over Hunter.
“I hope Miguel keeps it up,” said Lehman head coach Steve Schulman, CUNYAC’s Coach of the Year. “He’s been on like this for the last couple of games, he really puts the pressure on our opponents when he shoots like that.”
Medgar Evers (6-20) was led by sophomore guard Jamaal Jessimy (Erasmus / Brooklyn, NY) and freshman guard Kevin Broadus (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) who each scored 18 points.
The Lightning will now take on number 4 seed, College of Staten Island on Wednesday night, February 23, at 5:30 pm at Lehman’s Apex Arena.
