Christopher Newport 89, Greensboro 69

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Christopher Newport's men's basketball team concluded the regular season on a high note Sunday evening defeating Greensboro 89-69 on Senior Day.

The Captains lead by 10 at halftime, 45-35. CNU shot 16-of-35 (46%) from the floor, 8-of-12 (67%) on three's and 5-of-7 (71%) from the free throw line. The Captains held the Pride to 10-of-27 (37%) shooting from the field, 4-of-12 (33%) on three's and 11-of-16 (69%) from the charity stripe.

CNU out scored Greensboro 44-34 in the second stanza. GC shot 13-of-41 (32%) from the floor, 3-of-10 on three's and just 5-of-11 (46%) from the charity stripe. The Captains finished the half 14-of-30 (47%) from the floor, 2-of-10 on three's and 14-of-17 (82%) from the free throw line.

For the game, GC finished 23-of-68 (34%) from the floor, 7-of-22 (32%) on three's and 16-of-27 (59%) from the free throw line. CNU was 30-of-65 (46%) from the field, 10-of-22 (46%) on three's and 19-of-24 (79%) from the charity stripe.

Rodney Blackstock lead the Pride with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Daron Williams finished with 21 points off the bench.

The Captains were lead by five players in double figures. Leading the way on Senior Day was senior Blake Brookman who finished with 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Korey Lewis added 18 points and 10 boards off the bench, Roderic Carey finished with 16 points and 14 boards, Jeremy Romeo added 14 points and five assists, and senior Steven Murrer added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Greensboro finishes the regular season 10-14 overall and 6-6 in the USA South. CNU concludes the regular season 18-7 overall and 8-4 in conference play and finish the regular season on a five-game winning streak.

GC returns to action Thursday night at 7 pm in the quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament against Shenandoah. The Captains return to action the same day, as they take on NC Wesleyan at 3 pm.
