Texas Lutheran 73, Howard Payne 55

SEGUIN, Texas — Senior guard Mike Ekanem posted career highs in points (21) and steals (7) in his final collegiate game to lead the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to a 73-55 home win Saturday over Howard Payne.

Ekanem made eight of his 12 field goal attempts and hit three three-pointers in the win. All three of Ekanem’s three-pointers and 17 of his points came in the second half. He added three assists and four rebounds.

Fellow senior guard Nik Summers contributed 14 points, three rebounds and three assists, and TLU leading scorer, and senior post, Tommy Stolhandske added 12 points and nine rebounds. Fourth-year junior Matt Nelson scored eight points and collected nine rebounds.

Texas Lutheran ended its 2004-05 season with a 13-12 overall record and a 12-10 mark in the American Southwest Conference West Division.

Howard Payne fell to 9-16 overall and to 9-13 in the ASC West. Kendrick Johnson led HPU with 14 points, and Matt Zinser added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Texas Lutheran led by six, 30-24, at the break and stretched the lead to 22 with a 24-6 run that spanned six minutes of the second half (17:49 to 11:01). In that run, Will Hudson, Kevin Glienke, Summers, Ekanem, and Jason Morales all hit three-pointers.

Texas Lutheran made seven of its 13 second-half, three-point attempts.

While Texas Lutheran was red hot from the three-point line, Howard Payne made just one three in 12 attempts in the second half. The Yellow Jackets finished the game with a 34.4 percent overall field goal percentage and a 19.2 percent shooting mark from the three-point line.

TLU made 44.3 percent of its total field goals and 42.9 percent of its total three-point attempts.

Saturday’s game was the final collegiate game for TLU seniors Stolhandske, Summers, Ekanem and Glienke and for four-year juniors Matt Nelson and Matt Frye.
