Salve Regina 62, New England College 45

NEWPORT, R.I. — After trailing early (10-3), Salve Regina University men's basketball used a 25-2 run during a 13-minute span in the first half to eventually defeat visiting New England College, 62-45, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Matt Coute [JR/Somerset, Mass.] scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half including a three-pointer during the big run. Jon Hazzard [SO/North Kingstown, R.I.] led the Seahawks with 17 points including a pair of second-half three-pointers and fast-break dunks.

Hazzard earned a double-double as he grabbed 10 boards, sharing team-high rebound honors with Chris Collier [SR/Exeter, N.H.]. Andrew Rego [FR/Little Compton, R.I.] came off the bench to score 13 points for the Seahawks.

New England's Ryan Jaziri [FR/Norwich, Conn.] scored 14 of his team-high 17 points in the second half as the Pilgrims got their deficit under double-digits just once (37-28 at the 14:38 mark) in the final 20 minutes. Tim LaTorra [SR/Windsor Locks, Conn.] had a dozen rebounds and four steals for the visitors.

Salve Regina (15-9; 12-4 CCC) earns the CCC South second seed and will host CCC North third seed, Gordon College, on Tuesday, February 22, at 8:00pm. The Seahawks now own an 18-4 mark against New England College (12-13; 4-12 CCC) including six straight victories over the Pilgrims.

Collier had a game-high 15 points for Salve Regina when the Seahawks defeated Gordon, 72-51, in this season's conference opener on December 4, 2004.
